17 May Sun Awareness Week
This week is Sun Awareness Week, and so the importance of shielding our skin from sun damage will be at the forefront of everyone’s minds. At Chase PR, we work with brands that are dedicated to ensuring the best and safest protection, for not just face & body but for our eyes, too. Below, we show you how.
With experts suggesting that sunscreens with SPF 15 and 30 only protect our skin from burning for 15 and 30 times the amount of time we’d take to burn without any sun protection, it’s going to be time to dig out the factor 50 for maximum protection. Bioderma and Institut Esthederm offer maximum protection from the sun, but also from other threats, which damage our skin on a daily basis!
The Institut Esthederm range reflects that SPF isn’t sufficient, as it measures the risk of sunburn, but not the risk of ageing or photo-sensitisation. Institut Esthederm suncare goes beyond the protection factor: adapting the skin to sunlight conditions, preventing photo-ageing and controlling inflammation. Institut Esthederm chose the UV index used in meteorology and recommended by the WHO. Institut Esthederm skincare is designed to protect the skin without making it lose its capacity to adapt, and to neutralise the damaging effects of photo-ageing (ageing caused by exposure to sun).
Through its Photoderm range, Bioderma is committed to skin health by offering the best UVA/UVB balance with innovative textures. Exclusive to Bioderma, the Cellular Bioprotection® patent, found in all of the range’s products, protects the skin’s cells and DNA.
Now that we’ve covered skin protection from sun damage, lets move on to eye protection! We all know our skin needs protection from UV damage – however, our eyes are up to 10 times more sensitive to UV damage than our skin and yet 50% of people don’t protect themselves by wearing sunglasses. This is where our Transitions Light Adaptive Lenses step in.
UV damage to eyes can cause cancer (ocular melanoma), which can be prevented by using protection year round. Unless your glasses have an additional UV coating they do not protect you from UV damage, meaning the only option is to wear your sunglasses…not ideal in months like December. There is the extra hassle of carrying your glasses and sunglasses around with you and constantly swapping them. Our eyes need protection from the sun all year round, even on cloudy days! Cloud cover only reduces the amount of UV light by 10%. In the evenings and mornings we also get more light from reflective surfaces like roads. Because UV is found in the invisible part of the light spectrum, we can’t see it or feel it.
Since we can’t always tell how strong the UV rays are on a cloudy day, we risk not being protected all the time. Transitions Lenses protect us as they automatically darken with exposure to UV rays and block 100% UVA & UVB rays at all times, come rain or shine. Essentially, Transitions Lenses combine the benefits of glasses and sunglasses into one. Your lenses are clear indoors so they look like typical glasses and will then darken when exposed to UV outdoors, looking like sunglasses. If there is no UV exposure they remain clear; you will never look out of place.
